2022 Winners and losers: Oppo
Another twelve months are behind our back, and Oppo once again remains among the leaders in the smartphone world. It announced a custom NPU called MariSilicon X in the final days of 2021, but it was only this year that it made it to smartphones. Oppo unveiled foldables, regular flagships and a lot of mid-rangers. Here are the winners and losers in the Oppo portfolio for 2022. Winner and loser: Oppo Find N2 The new foldable looks a lot like the predecessor, but seeing how the Find N had arguably the best hardware among horizontal foldables that's not bad news. Oppo retained what was...

The folks at Telegram are sending off 2022 with yet another one of their sizable feature dumps. The latest update adds a bunch of new features, including spoiler formatting for media, new drawing tools, zero storage usage, and more. Along with being able to add spoiler formatting for text, Telegram now lets add spoiler formatting for images and videos as well. This appears as a shimmering layer with a blur on top of the media, which hides the content unless the user taps on it. New storage management features let you configure separate auto-remove settings for cached...
Redmi 12C announced with Helio G85 SoC and 50MP camera
Xiaomi's Redmi unveiled the Redmi K60 series smartphones, Redmi Note 12 Pro Speed Edition, and a bunch of accessories a few days ago. And before 2022 comes to an end, Redmi announced a new entry-level smartphone today, dubbed Redmi 12C. The Redmi 12C is built around a 6.71" HD+ screen with a notch for the 5MP selfie camera. Its back panel - having a non-slip texture and diagonal stripes - sports a fingerprint scanner and a dual camera setup headlined by a 50MP unit. Redmi doesn't tell us anything about the second camera, but we believe it could be a depth sensor. The 12C has the...

More photos of OnePlus 11R reveal screen, confirm overall design
The first OnePlus 11R images leaked earlier this month, and we saw some key details such as the three-cam setup on the back, as well as the return of the alert slider. The device was in a pre-production shell, made to keep the overall design from leaking, but now new photos come to fill us in on that. The new photos revealed the OnePlus 11R will have a screen with curved edges and a single punch hole in the center. The source claims we’re looking at a 1220p display, 50MP main camera with Sony sensor and OIS, and the IR blaster that was already revealed before. OnePlus 11R The...
Ice Universe: Oppo is working on its own smartphone chipset
Smartphones are constrained by batteries and thermals and perform optimally when specialized hardware does the heavy lifting – hardware like Oppo’s MariSilicon X ISP and the new MariSilicon Y Bluetooth chip. Of course, these are partial solutions, for best results a completely custom chipset is what is needed. That seems to be the thinking over at Oppo HQ as Ice Universe reports that the company is planning to introduce its own smartphone chipset in 2024. Oppo has allegedly hired thousands of people to work on the project, but unfortunately, further details are scarce for now. It will...
Lenovo Tab M9 unveiled: $140 tablet with 9" screen, optional 4G
Lenovo unveiled a kid-friendly tablet that slots between the Tab M8 and Tab M10. It is the Lenovo Tab M9 and – you guessed it! – it has a 9” display. This tablet will be on the floor at CES 2023, but it is in no rush to go to market as it will launch in Q2 (April-July). The base model will start at $140. The tablet has a 9” LCD display, a pretty basic panel with 1,340 x 800px resolution (15:9). It offers up to 400 nits of brightness and 60% coverage of the NTSC color space. There is a 2MP camera on the front for video (and face unlock, there is no fingerprint reader), plus an 8MP camera on...
Massive leak shows Lenovo's CES 2023 slate: ThinkPhone, Tab Extreme and more
Lenovo will have a very, very busy CES this January – the global tech event will run from January 5 to the 8th and Lenovo will be introducing new tablets, laptops and other devices from its major product lines. And, perhaps, the ThinkPhone too. Leakster Evan Blass has posted images of all new devices that will be present at CES. First, here are clean images of the Lenovo ThinkPhone. Its design borrows from the famous ThinkPad line of laptops, though the actual hardware may be based on a Motorola – the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 powered Moto X40, perhaps, or something equally...
Entry-level Samsung Galaxy F04 coming soon with 8GB RAM, teaser reveals
Samsung is preparing to launch the Galaxy F04, and the first market will be India. According to leaked teasers, the device will be exclusive to Flipkart and will sell for less than INR8,000, which is about $100. There are no official specs yet, but the device is expected to be a renamed Galaxy A04 or Galaxy A04e with its two cameras on the back. It is will bring 8GB RAM, which will be a massive selling point at this price point. If the Galaxy F04 is indeed a close relative to the A04 devices, we’re looking at a phone with a 6.5” LCD at the front, and a 5MP selfie camera sitting...

New Honor 80 Pro appears in renders, will sell only offline
The Honor 80 family has four members, and it looks like a fifth is on its way. A new device appeared online with a flat display and camera island just like the 80 Pro, and sources claim it will also be named “Honor 80 Pro”. However, the upcoming device will have a new screen with a single selfie camera behind the punch hole, and a slightly different set of shooters on the back. The twist is it will be only for the offline market and won’t be available on the company website. The new Honor 80 Pro is said to bring a 6.67” OLED with a Full HD+ resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate, and a...
11.1-inch and 13-inch OLED iPad Pros are coming in 2024
Apple is working on ever so slightly enlarging the screens of its iPad Pros, from 11" and 12.9" to 11.1" and 13", respectively. These models will arrive on the market in 2024, according to display analyst Ross Young. These iPad Pros will feature OLED screens, and because of the minute increase in diameter could actually have the same overall physical sizes as their predecessors, as Apple may opt to simply trim the bezels somewhat in order to accommodate the new panels. The current lineup consists of an 11" iPad Pro with a traditional LCD screen and a 12.9" model with a mini LED...
Samsung Galaxy A04s is now receiving the One UI 5 update based on Android 13
Samsung wants to finish its One UI 5 rollout by the end of this year, having set a record-breaking pace so far, updating dozens of models since late October when the madness started. The latest device to be graced with Android 13 and One UI 5 on top is the entry-level Galaxy A04s. It was launched with Android 12 a few months ago, and is now making the jump to Android 13, with the new firmware version labeled A047MUBU1BVK5. This is currently going out to units sold in Panama, and presumably will spread across the world very soon, if there are no problems found in the meantime. Since...

Ming-Chi Kuo: the iPad mini isn't going away yet, the foldable iPad will be pricey
The iPhone didn’t immediately kill off the iPod, the MP3 player was cheaper, so it hung around for a few years. Now that Apple is preparing to enter a new product category, foldables, rumors are swirling that it will kill off a product from an old one – The Elec reported that Cupertino is planning to discontinue the iPad mini after its foldable tablet hits the market. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo disagrees with that assessment and the reasoning is simple – the foldable iPad will have a “markedly higher price” than the mini. The iPad mini (2021) itself had to go up in price recently as the...

My Top 5 phones of 2022 - Yordan
The year finally comes to an end, and we look back and reflect on what was served to us in these eventful 12 months. In the world of smartphones, we saw over 500 new models, many of them great in one way or another. As my colleagues share their top five choices for 2022 we can normally identify some trends - some love the foldables, others went for cameraphones. I just like premium devices in general. I have been writing about mobile technology for over ten years, the last six being part of GSMArena. I have seen plenty of innovation and evolution, but I genuinely believe 2022 was the...
My top 5 phones of 2022 - Victor
Another year has gone by, and with it, a slew of devices. One of the best parts of our job here at GSMArena is getting to experience new tech all of the time. This past twelve months, I got to spend a lot of quality with the best smartphones out there. Yet the list you are about to read is about phones that made a lasting impression on me, personally. That doesn't mean the phones are the best from the past year, nor should it serve as buying advice for anyone in particular. I personally like a phone with a clear purpose and I believe that will be evident from the justification of each...
2022 Winners and losers: Google
Google has been making Pixel smartphones for years, but it’s only now beginning to enter a flow state of sorts. After a significant change of pace with the Pixel 6 series in 2021 - making an in-house chipset, ushering in a new design, and finally overhauling the camera system - in 2022 it was time to do some good old-fashioned refining. As a result, the Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are capable and mature smartphones, and their support cast looks almost complete with a Pixel Watch and a coming-soon Pixel tablet. Google is taking things step by step, but there’s no denying that it’s getting a...
Samsung Galaxy A13 with Helio G80 and Xcover Pro now receive One UI 5
Yesterday Samsung released the Android 13-based One UI 5.0 stable update for the Exynos 850-powered Galaxy A13 (SM-A135F), and now it's the MediaTek variant that's getting a taste of the latest version of Android and Samsung's custom interface. We are talking about the Samsung Galaxy A13's SM-A137F model, powered by the Helio G80 SoC. It gets the usual One UI 5.0 goodies and November 2022 Android security patch, which comes with firmware version A137FXXU1BVL1. The update is rolling in Europe, and if you haven't received it on your Helio G80-powered Galaxy A13 yet, you can check for it...
2022 Winners and Losers: Honor
After a solid bounce-back year, Honor doubled down on its strategy to regain market space across Europe and China with a strong push of smartphones, tablets, laptops and wearable devices. The brand released its first foldable with the Magic V in China which was later followed by the Magic Vs, which will make its way to markets outside of China eventually. Honor Magic4 Pro was one of the most feature-packed flagship offerings while the Honor 70 and Honor 80 were the key phones in the midrange segment. We also got solid laptops with the likes of the MagicBook 14 2022, which impressed us with...

Samsung's One UI 5.1 may be launching with the Galaxy S23 family in February
Samsung's One UI 5.0 based on Android 13 went out to dozens of devices already, but the rollout has only started a few weeks ago in October. Still, according to a new report, Samsung is already testing One UI 5.1, the successor to One UI 5.0. One UI 5.1 may in fact debut on the Galaxy S23 family, which if past rumors are accurate should be announced on February 1. That would definitely be a quick turnover, jumping from One UI 5.0 to One UI 5.1 in just a few weeks. Then again, as the minor increment implies, One UI 5.1 will probably not be as huge an update as its predecessor was....
Top stories of 2022: Q3
Welcome to our recap of the top news articles of 2022. Having covered the first two quarters of the year it's now time to go over the most interesting stories of Q3. In Q3, we got probably the biggest smartphone announcements of the year, not counting the Galaxy S22 series. The months of July, August, and September saw the announcement of the iPhone 14 series, the new Galaxy Z series, the Nothing phone, the Xiaomi 12S series, the Asus Zenfone 9 and ROG Phone 6 and 6 Pro, among others. Apple's event was the most anticipated. The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max brought the Dynamic Island...
2022 Winners and losers: vivo
vivo was among the top smartphone players, even if Western markets once again only saw a fraction of its lineup. The company launched some impressive products in 2022, but it didn't go without missteps too. Winner: vivo X80 Pro The X80 series did not have a Pro+ variant, meaning the X80 Pro was the flagship this time around. It launched in April, and at the time, it was everything you would want from a flagship - the best chipset from Qualcomm (or Mediatek at home), four impressive cameras, Zeiss optics with T* lens coating, OIS, fast charging. Eight months later, it still is a phone...
Top 10 most popular reviews of 2022: Q3
Having gone through the most popular reviews of Q1 and Q2 it's now time to recap what phones of the third quarter got your interest. Let's kick things off with some of the obvious entries on the list, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4. Samsung's foldables always generate a lot of hype, particularly the bigger Fold family and the Fold4 was no exception. After its announcement on August 10, we immediately got to work reviewing it and you, in turn paid a lot of attention. However, it is interesting to note that the Galaxy Z Flip4 didn't make the top ten. It was close, but still, it's...
Realme's 240W charging tech coming on January 5, Realme 10 launching soon in India
The fastest-charging smartphone right now is the Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Explorer, having support for 210W wired charging. But that could change soon since Realme is rumored to launch the GT Neo 5 with 240W charging. Realme hasn't divulged anything about the GT Neo 5 yet, but the company today announced it will hold an event on January 5 in China at 2:30PM local time to talk about new charging tech. And judging by Realme's choice of words in its Weibo post and the poster it shared, we believe the company will introduce its 240W charging tech. The fastest-charging Realme smartphone right now...
Samsung Galaxy S22 sales to come short of 30 million sales goal, foldables also in decline
The Galaxy S22 series was expected to strengthen Samsung’s position as a top manufacturer, but sales failed to reach their goal. According to Korean sources, Samsung increased its devices' ASP (Average Sales Price) by just 2%, while Apple saw a rise of 7%. Local media and analysts pointed out that Samsung might lose its premium image abroad, as the best-selling model was the super affordable Galaxy A12, while foldable sales also came short of the expectations in the United States. The decrease is expected to continue throughout the holiday period. According to research, the Galaxy...

Dozens of Apple devices send automated crash notifications in a ski town
Apple unveiled its latest iPhones and Watch 8 series with the ability to send an automated call to emergency services when the device experiences an abrupt stop, usually a result of a car crash. The feature is now backfiring, as one US ski town fielded 71 crash notifications, The Colorado Sun reported. According to the Summit County 911 Center, none of these automated calls was an emergency - skiers just stopped abruptly on the slopes without needing medical attention. The “crash detection” and “fall detection” feature on the iPhone 14 series automatically calls 911. The emergency...

nubia announces Red Magic 8 Pro with a 6,000 mAh battery, Pro+ gets 165W fast charge
The nubia brand just announced its gaming smartphone Red Magic 8 Pro. It is actually two different phones - Red Magic 8 Pro with a 6,000 mAh battery and 80W fast charging, and Red Magic 8 Pro+ with a smaller 5,000 mAh battery but 165W faster charging. The Plus version also comes with more RAM and storage options, but nubia kept the overall set of features and design the same - both the Pro and the Pro+ share the same chipset, cameras, footprint, and software. The two nubia Red Magic 8 Pro devices come with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. It is coupled by a Red Magic R2 chip for better...
OnePlus 11 shown in live images, official-looking renders also in tow
We already know what the OnePlus 11 would look like from the multiple leaked renders in the past couple of months, but it's always better to have some live images, as those are much harder to fake. Alleged live images of OnePlus 11 As you can see, the photos merely confirm what we've seen earlier in the renders. The circular camera module is in place along with the Hasselblad branding and the sandstone-like finish of the back panel. Interestingly enough, the display indeed appears to be flat. As a bonus, a couple of official-looking renders seem to be circulating on Weibo,...

The flagship smartphone series Redmi K60 is arriving, and we know it will have at least two very different looks - one with a Blue vegan leather back and another designed to look like carbon. We are also expecting a flurry of new devices, including two new wearables - Redmi Watch 3 and Redmi Band 2 - as well as new TWS earphones Redmi Buds 4 Lite. On top of that, we also expect an entirely new Redmi Note 12 Pro Speed smartphone that brings a new chipset, camera and looks with a...
Samsung Galaxy S23 series battery capacity revealed, hero colors also pictured
Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S23 lineup in the first weeks of next year, and rumors and claims keep mounting, revealing more details about the phone. According to Samsung-oriented leakster Ice Universe, the batteries of the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ will have a slightly increased capacity from their predecessors. Still, they will not bring any changes to the charging speeds. We also spotted promo images of the Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra in their respective hero colors, Pink and Green, respectively. This is also the first time we see official-looking images of...

2022 Winners and losers: Xiaomi
Xiaomi is one of the three major players in the smartphone market, and while it had a turbulent 2022 financially it also saw some stellar products by the company. It also saw it invested significant sums into its EV business, which should hopefully bear fruit in the future. In the world of smartphones, we saw more than a dozen Redmi Note 11 phones, somve very competitive Poco phones and a few exciting Xiaomi 12 series beasts. Here's a list of Xiaomi's highs and lows from the past year as we saw them - the 13 series aren't included as they are too new to be judged yet. Winner: Xiaomi...
Motorola Moto G72 in for review
Say hello to the Moto G72 - a capable mid-range phone with content consumption on its mind. It comes with a USB cable, protective case, and a 33W charger, though in some markets you will also get headphones. Those would end on the good old 3.5mm connector, as the Moto G72 has a built-in audio jack. And it's a useful one as well, supporting Dolby Atmos. The stereo speakers aboard the Moto G72 are also Dolby Atmos-ready. Unboxing the Moto G72 Continuing the thread of content consumption, the Moto G72 also has a great display - a 6.55-inch OLED with 1080p resolution, and HDR10+...

ZTE announced the Nubia Z50 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and the 64MP IMX787 35mm main camera that we loved so much on the Axon 40 Ultra. The Nubia Z50 is China-exclusive for now and starts at CNY 2,999 for the base 8/128GB trim. The OnePlus 11, which will arrive on February 7, will have a 6.7-inch QHD+ AMOLED with a 120Hz refresh rate, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, 12GB or 16GB of RAM, a 4,870mAh...
My top 5 phones of 2022 - Ivan
Year 2022 is almost up and that means it's time for us at Team GSMArena to nominate our favorite phones of the year. Should you care about mine? Probably not, but if you insist - keep on reading. In reverse order (my absolute favorite is the last one)... ZTE Axon 40 Ultra The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is the perfect-sized flagship. It isn't huge, not small either, yet has a large 6.8-inch display, a lasting 5,000mAh battery, a great design that reminds me of the lovely Galaxy S21 Ultra, and a unique set of cameras. The focal lengths of the main camera and the zoom camera are what make...
Top stories of 2022: Q1
Welcome to our recap of the top news articles of 2022. We will now be looking back on the most popular stories from the first quarter of the year with each subsequent quarter getting its own story. In Q1, we got a few major announcements. Samsung's Galaxy S22 series launched in February. The Galaxy S22 Ultra was the biggest announcement (metaphorically, and literally). It brought back the built-in S Pen, and the squarer Galaxy Note design, while simultaneously bringing refinement to the battery and cameras. The Galaxy S22 and S22+ got bumped up to a new 50MP main camera and brought back...

Weekly poll: Oppo Find N2 and N2 Flip enter the foldable ring, are you on their side?
Oppo introduced its first flip foldable last week, the Find N2 Flip. While we don’t have the details yet, we know that in the near future this model will be available globally (or at least in the markets that Oppo covers), unlike the original Find N. And, sadly, unlike the new Oppo Find N2 as well – it looks like this one will be China-only just like its predecessor. Still, Oppo engineers have achieved massive improvements, so it is worth a look too, even if it is just window shopping for most. Let’s start with the Oppo Find N2 Flip. This clamshell foldable will be going up against...
Weekly poll results: Xiaomi 13 duo looks like a winner
Xiaomi’s 2022 ends on a high note – last week’s poll shows that the new 13-series flagships are well-liked and each has its fans. The Xiaomi 13 Pro shines with its 1” sensor, something that was available only on special phones like the 12S Ultra before. The Ultra never got a wide release, but the 13 Pro is going global. Details on that are scarce for now and some people are concerned about the price – we don’t know the exact number yet, but based on the 12-series these will be out of reach for some. For those that can afford them, however, the Xiaomi 13 duo are serious...
Top 10 most popular reviews of 2022: Q1
The end of the year is upon us, and as has become tradition we go over all of the reviews of the past twelve months and do a rundown of the ones that you found most interesting. Without further ado, let's kick things off with the first quarter of the year 2022. At the very beginning of 2022, Samsung made a rather big splash with the announcement of its budget flagship - the Galaxy S21 FE 5G. So much so that the phone's review almost made it to the top of the popularity list. We can definitely see why. With a reasonable price tag and really capable hardware, the S21 FE delivers big...
2022 Winners and losers: Apple
It was a challenging year for phone makers as chip shortages and factory shutdowns wreaked havoc on the supply chain. Even Apple was affected, although less than many of its rivals, which allowed it to shine in a big way. Looking back at Apple's 2022 brings us to the same sentiment as 2021 before it - the more things change, the more they stay the same. Apple is one of the more predictable companies in the tech world, which causes us to take Cupertino’s technological brilliance for granted sometimes. All things considered Apple had a good year. All of its products were good, some were...
Honor X7a's specs and images leak
Honor unveiled the Snapdragon 680-powered X7 in March, and it seems the company will soon follow up with an 'a' variant, whose specifications and images have leaked online. The Honor X7a, like the X7, is built around an HD+ display, but it's a tad smaller (6.7" vs. 6.74") and has a lower screen refresh rate (60Hz vs. 90Hz). The screen has a notch for the 8MP selfie shooter, but we don't know if it has the same specs as the X7's front-facing camera. Around the back, the Honor X7a has a quad camera setup comprising 50MP primary, 5MP ultrawide, 2MP macro, and 2MP telephoto units. The...
Motorola Moto G13's design revealed by leaked render
