IDC: tablet and Chromebook shipments grew in 2021, but things are slowing down

2020 was a banner year for tablets with record shipments in the fourth quarter. This was driven by the surge of people who work or study at home due to the pandemic. Now with the pandemic easing off, shipments are slowing down as well, according to data from the IDC. 2021 was still positive for manufacturers as total shipments went up 3.2% for the full year, reaching a total of 168.8 million. That’s the most slates shipped since 2016. However, the final quarter of the year made it clear that the demand is past its peak. In Q4 2021 tablet shipments were down to 46 million units, the...

ANYCUBIC Vyper 3D printer review

Introduction While not directly related to what I do here at GSMArena, 3D printing is a huge passion of mine. Having recently done an in-depth review on the CREALITY HALOT-ONE resin 3D printer, I recently got a chance to play with the ANYCUBIC Vyper and can now share what its real life performance is like. I have been doing Fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing for over a year and have owned a total of three 3D printers - my current Monoprice Select Mini V2, which is the only one I could reasonably keep with the limited home space I have and before that Prusa i3, which...

Huawei Watch GT Runner in for review

The Huawei Watch GT 3 is one of the best smartwatches on the market, and the company recently announced a new version called Watch GT Runner. The new device has a lot of similarities with the GT 3, but there are also some differences that need testing. The Huawei Watch GT Runner feels quite light, and has a bit sportier design with the cool stripes on the rubber strap. Another major change is the antenna design - it claims improved communication with the L1 and L5 satellites. The looks might be different, but the core functionality is largely unchanged. The Watch GT Runner is...

Weekly poll results: 5G still far from universal adoption

5G phones are now widely available, but the same can’t be said of 5G networks. Last week’s poll shows that the greatest barrier to adoption is that some countries still haven’t launched their 5G networks. The second most common issue is that many users don’t have a 5G-capable phone yet (about a quarter of voters). Not really surprising, if they don’t live in an area with 5G coverage. Of course, that hasn’t stopped makers from selling 5G phones in those regions – they frame it as future-proofing. And they do put in the work, e.g. Airtel in India was using phones from Apple, Realme,...

Flashback: the Moto G was one of the best $200 smartphones you could buy in 2013

The sub-$200 smartphone market in 2013 was pretty barren, buyers on a budget had only a few good options to choose from. Thankfully, “good” is underselling them – there were some excellent cheap phones from that period. Motorola Moto G The Motorola Moto G comes to mind. It launched at $180 and reviewers and users alike sang its praises. It made for a good second in command to the highly customizable Moto X and we still remember it fondly today. But how much of that was true excellence and how much is it rose-tinted glasses? Moto G next to its flagship sibling, the Moto...

iOS 15.4 beta adds support for 120Hz refresh rate in all apps

Apple's latest iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max flaunt 120Hz ProMotion displays, but only a handful of apps support 120 frames per second. Mostly system apps at that. Well, with the upcoming iOS 15.4 software, Apple is finally adding support for all apps to make use of the buttery-smooth experience. It's worth noting that the iOS 15.4 is currently in beta. For now, iOS 15.4 is still in beta and the information comes from a developer saying that he got the news from "someone at Apple". He posted a screenshot as proof. Yay, got a little message from someone at Apple today that this is fixed in...

OnePlus Buds Z2 vs Nothing ear (1)

OnePlus recently launched the Buds Z2, which are a pair of truly wireless earbuds and successor to the 2020 OnePlus Buds Z. While they are still fairly affordable, the new model comes with active noise-cancellation and improved drivers for better performance. Priced at $100, the new Buds Z2 cost exactly the same as the Nothing ear (1), which too are a pair of affordable wireless earbuds with ANC. Having reviewed them in the past, we had our reservations about both products but ultimately both seemed to perform reasonably well for the price. The question then is which one's better?...

OnePlus Nord 2T and Nord 2 CE Indian prices revelaed

A couple of days ago, some OnePlus Nord 2T specs leaked in the wild and now we have an expected price range for all of the handset's memory configurations along with a supposed release time frame. The same source tries to guess the rumored Nord 2 CE's price as well. Starting with the Nord 2T, which should replace the current Nord 2, 91mobiles believes that the device will be priced between INR 30,000 and INR 40,000. This range probably covers all configurations. In Euros, it's between €360 and €480. However, we believe that the European prices will be a tad higher due to import taxes. The...

The FAA reaches agreement with Verizon and AT&T to safely deploy C-band 5G near airports

This month, there’s been ongoing discussions between US carriers Verizon and AT&T, US Airlines, and the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) regarding the deployment of C-band 5G towers in areas near key airports. The concern lies with the potential for the C-band 5G towers being deployed by US carriers Verizon and AT&T and the Airport’s low-visibility equipment, specifically with interference of an altimeter devices. The latest development is that the US carriers and FAA have reached an agreement on which steps need to be taken to ensure safety of key airports while also deploying more...

So, we’ve done… better than we were expecting at the beginning of the quarter.” – Luca Maestri,...

Samsung travels to the future again, releases February update for the Galaxy Note20

Samsung has, for a while now, enjoyed releasing its monthly security patches for some devices before the month in question's even started. It's not always the same handsets or even series, so it all seems pretty random, but almost every month there's at least one phone or family to be blessed with next month's security updates... today. And yes, today is one of those days. Even though we're still in January and February is a few days away, the Korean company couldn't wait anymore and unleashed its February update for the Galaxy Note20 and Note20 Ultra. For now, this only seems to be...

Apple releases iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4 public beta

Earlier this week, Apple sent out iOS 15.3 and iPadOS 15.3 to supported mobile devices, and you know what that means, right? Time for a new beta - the development cycle never stops. This upcoming version of Apple's mobile software finally enables Face ID when you have a mask on (and it only took two years!). Additionally, there's some new functionality for wearers of glasses, although it requires you setting it up with each pair...

While our team is busy working on the full review let’s take a look at what’s so special about the P50 Pocket in this quick hands-on. First stop – design. P50 Pocket has its own look and feel which sets it apart from the other clamshell foldables we’ve come across. Huawei went with...

YouTube Shorts soon to get custom voiceover feature like TikTok

YouTube introduced Shorts back in 2020 as a direct rival to the rapidly growing TikTok. The 60-second videos, which you can edit within the app with some basic filters, captions and color correction will now borrow a new feature from the ByteDance's network. It appears you will soon be able to change the voiceover without using a third-party video editing app. XDA-Developers found traces of that in the code of a beta version of the app. Supposedly, YouTube is adding a dedicated button that allows you to record a track and easily overlay it before uploading. YouTube hasn't shared...

China approves AMD's acquisition of FPGA maker Xilinx, with some conditions

Back in 2015 Intel announced that it will acquire FPGA maker Altera, a move that AMD decided to counter in October 2020 with the acquisition of Xilinx. The conditions being that AMD ensures “the flexibility and programmability of Xilinx FPGAs” and “that their development methods are compatible with ARM-based processors”. If you’re wondering why this is important, remember that China is deeply invested in developing ARM-based products. AMD believes Xilinx will enhance its portfolio and...

The app can be downloaded from Google Play or Getapps and connects customers with roughly 2,000 service centers. Users can file device repair requests through the app, get price quotes and get live chat support. Additionally, the app...

Spotify obliges to remove Neil Young's music over Joe Rogan demands

Spotify will remove all of Neil Young's music from its platform after the musician requested the move earlier this week. Neil Young posted an open letter to Spotify and his record label Warner Music Group, demanding to have his music off Spotify because, in his view, the platform is aiding COVID-19 vaccine misinformation by providing a platform for Joe Rogan and his popular podcast. In his message, the "Heart of Gold" singer stated - 'They can have Rogan or Young. Not both.' - so now it seems Spotify has chosen Rogan. Spotify issued a statement - "We regret Neil's decision to remove his...

Blizzard announces a new survival game, commits to CoD for PlayStation

Through its official Twitter account, Blizzard announced a new online survival game but it seems like it's early in its development stage because the announcement serves more as a job listing. And it kind of makes sense given Blizzard's recent legal issues and its ongoing attemp to overhaul its working environment. The description on the company's website says that the new game will be available for PC and consoles, although it did not explicitly mention which consoles will get it. With Microsoft's ongoing Blizzard acquistion, nothing should be considered certain. We’re building a...

Citing Canalys' numbers, Microsoft says there were more than 340 million PCs...

The lawsuit is expected to be filed in Texas, Washington, Indiana, and District of Colombia and alleges that Google uses “dark patterns” – referring to tactics that could subtly influence a consumer’s behavior in a business’ favor using...

Apple's planned rules for third-party payments don't go far enough, says Dutch regulator

Last year the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) ordered Apple to allow developers of dating apps to use third-party payment services (for apps in the Dutch App Store). Apple announced plans to do so, but the authority isn’t happy with Cupertino. First, because Apple still hasn’t implemented the required changes. The second and more important issue is that even when implemented, the changes would not go far enough to satisfy ACM’s demands. Apple’s planned changes include several hoops that developers have to jump through. The worst of them is that developers have to...

An apparent software issue is causing some iPhone 13's to display a pink overlay on their screens and crash. The issue has been reported numerous times on Apple's Discussions Forums and Reddit. Seemingly the only common thing between the issues is that it's happening to the iPhone 13 series and not other Apple devices. One person reported that their GPS was inaccurate and the phone's display turned pink. Another said the battery was acting weird and the phone kept freezing and then proceeded to pink screen. A couple of users have reportedly had their phones replaced, while others were...
