Samsung Galaxy S24+ in for review

We finally managed to get our hands on the new Galaxy S24+ and have brought it straight in for review. Samsung packages just a USB-C cable with its Galaxy phones but some retailers will offer Samsung's new, rather tiny 25W adapter. Not everyone offers this deal, but Samsung does give you a free upgrade from 256GB to 512GB during the pre-order period, as well as trade-in bonuses and discounts on Samsung services. Unboxing the Galaxy S24+ The Galaxy S24+ feels like a completely new device - something we couldn't have imagined saying a few weeks ago. For one, it's fully matte on...

Netflix co-CEO says it's not worth launching an app for the Apple Vision Pro yet

Pre-orders for the Apple Vision Pro started off last week and a few days ago analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple has sold between 160,000 and 180,000 units. However, the proud new owners of Apple’s spatial computer won’t be using them to watch Netflix. Netflix Co-CEO Greg Peters was interviewed by Stratechery and was there is no Netflix app on the Vision Pro. Long story short, it’s not worth it – there aren’t enough potential subscribers that own the headset relative to the amount of effort it would take to port the streaming app to the platform. That is not to say that there will...

The AI features on Galaxy S24 phones in China are powered by Baidu, not Google

A decade ago Samsung dominated the Chinese market, but in 2023 it hovered around 2%. The leader of Samsung’s mobile division, TM Roh, has been on a quest to regain the lost market share. Earlier this week he told reporters “We are making efforts to reach Chinese consumers with products that fit the China market, through software optimisation that fits the China market, and I think the results are coming out little by little.” This better fitting software includes the new AI features, as it turns out. Everywhere else, the translation, summarization and generation functions are handled by...

Apple opens up iOS to alternative app stores in the EU

Forced by the EU's Digital Markets Act, Apple has today announced that it's making big changes to iOS, the App Store, and how browsers work on the platform. These changes will become available in the EU with the iOS 17.4 release which is scheduled to land in March. Let's start with browsing. Even today you can select a default browser that isn't Safari, but any browser that isn't Safari has to use Safari's WebKit rendering engine. That will change, every browser can use whatever engine it wants. Additionally, after EU iPhone owners install iOS 17.4, the first time they go into Safari they...

Google launches new Mint color for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro

Last week Google teased a new colorway for its Pixel 8 Pro, which was due to launch on January 25. In the meantime we've seen it in leaked press images, and now it's finally official. So, you can purchase a Google Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro in the new color called Mint, exclusively from the Google online store and Google Fi in the US. According to Jenny Davis, CMF design manager at Google, it's "a breath of fresh air and a cool spring breeze. It's serene, yet not boring. It's a luminous color that really invites the mind into a state of calmness - energized calmness". It joins Rose,...

Samsung Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra are already on sale in India

Samsung's Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra have already broken pre-order records in India, with more than 250,000 logged in the first three days. Pre-orders were supposed to go all the way up to January 31, which was seemingly their official release date. And yet, here we are days earlier and you can already order these from Amazon. The S24, priced at INR 79,999, even comes with same-day delivery, while the S24+ (starting at INR 99,999) and S24 Ultra (starting at INR 1,29,999) in some versions will reach you on January 29. That's only a couple of days before the official release...

Nokia G42 gets Android 14 in India

As we mentioned when we discussed Motorola's intentions regarding updates to Android 14, we'll say it again - there are some Android device makers who are very good at issuing updates (Google and Samsung come to mind), and there are some like Motorola and HMD Global. The latter has finally started pushing Android 14 today to the Nokia G42, which was announced last June. This is the first HMD device to receive the new OS version launched by Google many months ago, and hopefully it won't be the last - although HMD hasn't yet published a list of eligible phones. Nokia G42 Android 14...

Google Pixel 9 leaks in renders showing three rear cameras, flat sides

Mere hours ago some CAD-based renders of the upcoming Google Pixel 9 Pro were outed, and now it's time for its smaller and more affordable sibling to get the exact same treatment. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Google Pixel 9. Right off the bat, one thing clearly stands out. Unlike the Pixel 8, the Pixel 9 has three cameras on the rear, one of which obviously has a periscope zoom lens. This is a huge update for the 'vanilla' Pixel line, and one that brings it much more in tune with the Pro, spec-wise. Moving on, the other obvious thing is that Google has also been infested by the...

Asus Zenfone 11 shows up in the Google Play Console with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

Last year there was a rumor going round, saying that Asus would discontinue the Zenfone line and thus the Zenfone 10 would be the last of the diminutive flagships in the company's roster. Thankfully for those who are into smaller phones, Asus itself quickly denied the rumor, and that was that. Now, the Google Play Console comes to further prove the point that Asus has not given up on the Zenfones, by listing the upcoming Zenfone 11. The Zenfone 10 was announced in June 2023 and released the following month, so we're probably still quite far removed from the official introduction of...

Samsung is thinking about making a cheaper Galaxy Z Fold6

According to a new rumor out of its home market of Korea, Samsung is considering releasing a cheaper version of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold6. This isn't to say the Fold6 itself will be cheaper - but it might be joined by a cheaper option. This is the first time Samsung has ever considered developing a lower-cost foldable, the source of this rumor says. Interestingly, the reason for choosing the Fold line for this move and not the Flip is that the Flips that have launched so far are selling much more. So with a cheaper Fold, the Fold line could be reinvigorated. Samsung Galaxy Z...

OnePlus 12 video teardown shows massive cooling system inside

Today, the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R made their global debut. OnePlus has repeatedly talked about the OnePlus 12's massive internal cooling system, and a new teardown video lets us see just how big it actually is. Before we get to it, however, we first need to open up the phone somehow - and that's done from the back, using a heat gun. This shows us the 50W wireless charger, which, interestingly, makes it the fastest wireless charging phone in North America. The bottom speaker and battery come out next, and then it's time to gawk at the cooling system - after removing the...

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra survives drop and scratch tests

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra is the latest phone to go through PBKreviews’s drop and scratch test procedure. As usual, the phone was dropped several times from waist height across its front, sides and back. The first drop resulted in minor scrapes on the frame and a small crack on the screen at the top right corner. The back survived its tumble with no evident damage. The new titanium frame also survived a close encounter with a drill while its 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display and its Gorilla Glass Armor were put to the test against a mixture of dust and gravel with no blemishes or...

Apple releases iOS 17.3 with Stolen Device Protection

Today Apple has released iOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3 to supported devices. As always with Apple mobile OS updates, these should already be available to everyone who wants them - no staggered shenanigans here like over in Google-land. The new iOS update brings with it the new Stolen Device Protection feature. This feature brings an additional layer of security if someone has stolen your device and also has your passcode. Using Stolen Device Protection, Face ID or Touch ID is required to access saved passwords, while changing sensitive settings like your Apple ID password or your device...

OnePlus 12's cameras get detailed ahead of the phone's global debut

In less than 24 hours, OnePlus will finally introduce the OnePlus 12 for international markets, following the phone's initial announcement for China back in December. So now is a great time to talk about its cameras, OnePlus has thought, since it just put out a press release that's all about them. Let's dive in, shall we? The OnePlus 12 "will boast an industry-firt" customized Sony LYT-808 main camera, with a 1/1.4-inch sensor. The size lets it absorb 50% more light than the IMX890 main sensor used in the OnePlus 11, which should ensure exceptional performance in low-light or...

Exynos 2500 specs leak

Samsung's Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ feature the Korean company's own Exynos 2400 SoC in some markets, and these were just unveiled last week. And yet, we already have a leak about the upcoming Exynos 2500 chipset, which is due to be used in the Galaxy S25 family a year from now. The CPU will allegedly keep the 10-core configuration of the Exynos 2400, but the 2500 will use ARM's upcoming CPU cores. It will be made on Samsung's second-generation 3nm process (3nm GAP/SF3). This is apparently better than TSMC's current 3nm process in area and efficiency. The Exynos 2500's CPU is said...

Here's the official list of Motorola smartphones getting Android 14

Some companies, like Samsung, have almost finished their rollouts of Android 14 for dozens of devices already. Others, not so much. Today we're talking about Motorola. The brand has published information about which devices it will update to the latest version of the OS across its website. It's not an easily accessible list, mind you - you have to search for a particular device and only then, on each device's page, will you get any indication of whether you should expect Android 14 to come your way. Thankfully, the folks over at YTECHB have gone through all of the devices and...

Galaxy S24 series arrive with huge focus on AI - Week 3 in review

We can officially call the past seven days 'Galaxy week'. Samsung dominated the headlines with the Galaxy S24 series announcement, despite rumors and leaks spoiling most of the surprises. Naturally, the Galaxy S24 Ultra outshone the Galaxy S24 and S24+ thanks to its new 5x camera, Titanium frame and new Corning glass, and, well, the fact that it's Samsung's biggest flagship of the year. AI was front and center at the announcement - the new Galaxies enable a myriad of AI-powered features. Circle to Search is a gesture-driven feature made in collaboration with Google - you long-press on...

Redmi Note 13 4G in for review

Xiaomi commenced its Redmi Note 13 series global rollout last week and also announced a pair of Note 13 4G models. Redmi Note 13 4G is the most affordable entry in the series and is the latest device to make its way to the office. Based on the spec sheet, the chipset is the only difference between the Note 13 4G and its 5G counterpart but let’s see what else we've got here. Our Note 13 4G review unit comes in the Midnight Black color which features a mirror-like glossy finish on the back. It looked clean right out of the box but it was quickly smudged by fingerprints as we were...

Samsung Galaxy S24 pre-orders start in the US, Galaxy A25 and A15 5G too

This week’s Unpacked event brought Samsung’s latest flagships – the Galaxy S24 trio. You can check out our hands-on review for an introduction to the new features and hardware upgrades. And if you’re curious what all those AI features are all about, watch these videos. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is a rethink on how the long telephoto lens should work – instead of a fixed 10x lens, Samsung went for 5x magnification and a high resolution 50MP sensor that offers high quality zoom between 5x and 10x. And more, it enables 8K video recording and 4K @ 120fps from the tele camera. ...

Samsung Galaxy S24 series hot take

Samsun's Galaxy S24 series is here and it marks the most imporant announcement of the year so far. Samsung purposefully pushed the series' announcement two weeks earlier than the S23's and they'll ship nearly a month earlier than their predecessors. That gives Samsung plenty of time to establish some market dominance and give Apple's iPhone 15 series a proper fight. The Galaxy S series has become somewhat of a tame affair in these last few years but that's the norm when you have a mature market. Still, there are some noteworthy aspects of the Galaxy S24 series - this is our hot...

Huawei P70 series to come with a 6.7-inch screen and 50MP main cam with variable aperture

A new post by the well-known tipster, Digital Chat Station, reveals some of the Huawei P70 series' specs and the leak seems to arrive just in time. Since the Huawei P60 series came out in March last year, it's safe to assume that the P70 family will come out in the next two months or so. The post reads a quad-curved OLED panel on the front with a 1.5K resolution and a 6.7-inch diagonal. It's also a bit hard to tell from the machine-translated Chinese, but the handsets may come with two front-facing stereo speakers. Additionally, the trio of back cameras will be arranged in an...

Samsung Galaxy A15 in for review

This is the new Samsung Galaxy A15 - the LTE variant, mind you, not the 5G-enabled one, and it steps in to replace the Galaxy A14. The Galaxy A15 brings a 90Hz Super AMOLED display - a big step up from the 60Hz PLS LCD on the 4G Galaxy A14. The other key change is the move to a much more efficient 6nm MediaTek Helio G99 with as much as 8GB of RAM. Samsung kept the camera system mostly intact, ditto the 5,000mAh battery, but you do get faster charging at 25W. The Galaxy A15 ships with a USB cable. We have the Blue Black model - it's a dark blue as you'd guess, and it mostly...

Apple's 12.9-inch iPad Air appears in schematics, revealing design

After skipping the iPad Air upgrade last year, Apple is seemingly gearing up to launch a larger 12.9-inch iPad Air to match size of the current biggest iPad Pro. That's a big size bump from the available 10.9-inch iPad Air. 12.9-inch iPad Air CAD renders 91mobiles unearthed a bunch of schematics showing the rough design of the upcoming iPad Air, which will likely be unveiled sometime this spring. The images show a familiar overall design language but the rear camera along with the LED flash are reminiscent of a distant iPhone X/XS design. Unfortunately, aside from the...

Exynos 2400 can keep up with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in real games

Even though the Exynos 2400 drags behind the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in synthetic benchmark tests, even by just a little, the two chips seem to be neck to neck in real-world gaming scenarios. NL Tech tested the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-powered Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra alongside the Exynos 2400-powered Galaxy S24+ with a bunch of popular Android games to see if there's any difference. The results are quite surprising, to say the least. The two handsets performed similarly in Genshin Impact, PUBG Mobile, Mobile Legends and Fortnite. In Gehnshin the two chips maintained about 60fps, in PUB Mobile at...

OnePlus Watch 2 with Wear OS to be unveiled at MWC next month

Last year we heard that the OnePlus Watch 2 would finally launch this year, and today a new rumor definitely corroborates that. According to a source that has been accurate at times in the past, the OnePlus Watch 2 will become official at Mobile World Congress, which takes place in Barcelona at the end of next month. Furthermore, it's once again said to run Wear OS. Hopefully that means Wear OS 4, as previously leaked. This would make the OnePlus Watch 2 very different from the original OnePlus Watch, which launched back in 2021 and ran a proprietary OS. Xiaomi took the plunge into...

Google teases new Minty Fresh colorway for the Pixel 8 Pro

Google's online store is now teasing a new drop. It's not a new device, mind you, just a new color for the Pixel 8 Pro. It will become available on January 25 at midnight PT, and it's called Minty Fresh. It's actually unclear whether this will be limited to just the Pixel 8 Pro (shown in the teaser), or if it will also make its way to the Pixel 8. We don't have a lot to wait in order to find out, however. 01000110 01110010 01100101 01110011 01101000 00100000 01111001 01100101 01100001 01110010 00101100 00100000 01100110 01110010 01100101 01110011 01101000 00100000 01100100 01110010...

Apple Vision Pro pre-orders are live, you won't believe what's in the box

Today Apple has started taking pre-orders for its first "spatial computer", the Vision Pro headset. It will become available, as previously announced, on February 2. With the pre-order page come more details about the headset, but let's start with pricing. It's $3,499 with 256GB of storage, $3,699 with 512GB, or $3,899 with 1TB. You can get all versions with one-year financing through Apple Card monthly installments. AppleCare+ for the Vision Pro is $499, and gives you unlimited repairs for accidental damage protection, an "Express Replacement Service", and 24/7 priority access to...

Samsung Galaxy A25 5G in for review

Say hello to the Samsung Galaxy A25 - the entry-level phone that is however very important for Samsung in its quest to regain the smartphone crown. The Galaxy A25 needs to live up, or as the case may be, surpass its predecessor, the Galaxy A24 and we'd say it does it thoroughly. The new phone adds 5G (the Galaxy A24 was LTE-only) courtesy of a more efficient 5nm Exynos 1280 chipset. It also brings the Super AMOLED screen to 120Hz, up from 90Hz on its predecessor. Sadly that AMOLED still lacks a fingerprint scanner embedded into it - it's a capacitive side-mounted one for the Galaxy...

Samsung Galaxy AI is coming to these older devices

Yesterday, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra - all three models bursting at the seams with AI. Galaxy AI, in fact. They will be running Android 14 of course, with One UI 6.1 on top - unlike any other Samsung device so far (they're all on One UI 6 tops). So, if you have an older Samsung, you may be wondering whether your device will at some point get some of those AI features. Good news: the answer is yes. "Many" of them, according to Samsung itself. The models that will, at least initially, get these AI features, are the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+,...

Tecno's foldable, the Phantom V2 Fold, pops up on Geekbench, revealing key specs

Tecno's second-generation foldable, the Phantom V2 Fold, is expected to arrive in Q1 this year and its likely debut is during this year's MWC 2024 in Barcelona. Ahead of the announcement, the handset stopped by Geekbench, revealing some of its specs. If you are familiar with Geekbench's listings, you probably know the bits they reveal. For instance, the sheet suggests the upcoming Phantom V2 Fold will run on the MediaTek Dimenisity 9000+ chip. That's the same chip inside the original Phantom V Fold. The unit tested has 12GB of RAM and runs on Android 14, but those likely aren't...

HarmonyOS Next gets closer to prime time, video shows off the new UI design language

HarmonyOS Next is getting closer to release – Huawei just posted an introduction video that highlights some of the changes to the UI design language. It’s trying to break away from the drab flat design and add back dimensionality with concepts like “Spatial,” “Vivid Color” and “Immersive.” This version of HarmonyOS is dubbed “Star River” edition, although some online translation services render the name as “Galaxy” edition. We’ll stick with “Star River” to avoid confusion. HarmonyOS Next will drop Android support in China, so local developers are busy porting over their apps to...

Samsung Galaxy S24+ gets QHD+ display and 12GB of RAM, S24 tags along with 7 years of support

The Samsung Galaxy S24 series arrive to prove that AI is the future, but one simple upgrade matters more in the here and now – all three S24 phones have LTPO displays with 1-120Hz variable refresh rate. The Ultra phones had that already, but this is a long awaited upgrade for people who prefer the vanilla and plus models. The Samsung Galaxy S24+ gets another upgrade – QHD+ resolution. This on a flat 6.7” display brings the experience quite close to the Ultra at a lower price point. The phone is roughly the same size as the S23+ (0.3mm narrower, 0.7mm taller, 0.1mm thicker) and weighs the...

AI-focused Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra brings a new 5x camera, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is here, bringing a bunch of updates, while maintaining its predecessor's formula. Visually, the Galaxy S24 Ultra looks very similar to the S23 Ultra but there are notable changes. The frame is now made of a titanium alloy instead of aluminum. Titanium is more durable and scratch-resistant than aluminum without increasing the weight - the Galaxy S24 Ultra is actually a gram lighter than the S23 Ultra. The new Ultra is a bit thinner (0.3mm), and shorter (1.1mm), thanks largely to slimmer bezels. Glass-wise, the S24 Ultra employs a new Gorilla Glass Armor on the...

Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite gets Android 14-based One UI 6 update

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite, unveiled in May 2021 with Android 11-based One UI 3.1, is receiving the One UI 6 stable update based on Android 14. The One UI 6 update comes with firmware version T225NKOU6DWL9 and requires a download of over 1.5GB. It's seeding for the LTE version (SM-T225) in South Korea, but the rollout should expand to other countries and the Wi-Fi model (SM-T220) soon. If you live in South Korea and are yet to receive the update on your Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite, you can manually check for it by heading to the tablet's Settings > Software update menu. Via

IDC confirms: Apple was king of the smartphone market in 2023, overtaking Samsung

The last time Samsung wasn't No.1 in smartphone sales in any given year was all the way back in 2010. And yet - it's finally happened again. Just like competing analyst house Canalys revealed a few hours ago, IDC is now out with its own report and confirming the once-in-more-than-a-decade news: Apple took the crown away from Samsung in 2023. According to IDC estimates, the Cupertino company shipped 234.6 million smartphones last year, for a market share of 20.1%, while Samsung only managed 226.6 million shipments taking 19.4% of the pie. In third was Xiaomi with 145.9 million units...

Realme 12 Pro series' launch date announced

Realme set up an event page for the Realme 12 Pro series on its official website last week, suggesting the lineup would launch this month without revealing the date, which we now know is January 29. The Realme 12 Pro series will be unveiled on January 29 in India at noon local time. Realme hasn't revealed how many smartphones are included in the series, but it likely consists of the Realme 12 Pro and Realme 12 Pro+. Last week, the brand revealed the design of what's likely the Pro+ model. Realme partnered with luxury watch design master Ollivier Saveo to design the lineup, which...

Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, and Watch6 finally get blood pressure and ECG support in India

Following approval by India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organization, Samsung's Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, and Watch6 models (including the Pro and Classic ones) can now finally, for the first time, measure your blood pressure and take an ECG in India. For this, you need Samsung Health Monitor installed on both your watch and your phone - which has to be a Samsung running Android 9.0 or later because why not gatekeep features when you can gatekeep features, right? Anyway, there are calibration steps involved before you take a blood pressure measurement - you are actually required...

Galaxy S24 series pre-order benefits in Europe outed along with exclusive colors

Samsung's big unveiling event for the Galaxy S24 family is taking place this Wednesday, on January 17. So now, with mere hours to go, the last-minute leaks are starting to pour in. This one right here seems to have originated Samsung's Austrian arm - someone sharing a screenshot of its internal systems. This lets us know that, as a pre-order promo, in Austria (and presumably in a lot of other EU or at least Western European countries), you will get a storage bump for free. So if you buy the 128GB model, you'll get the one with 256GB instead. And so on - pay for 256GB, get 512GB. It even...

Poco promises 3 Android updates a 4 years of security patches for both X6 models. Poco X6 Pro features...

Weekly poll: can the Asus ROG Phone 8 find a place in your pocket?

The new Asus ROG Phone 8 is very much still a gaming phone, but this time around Asus designed it with everyday usability in mind. It’s smaller and lighter than before and has a proper IP68 dust and water resistance rating (vs. IP54 on last year’s model). Bigger changes include a 32MP 3x telephoto camera and improved stabilization for the main cam (Hybrid Gimbal Stabilizer 3.0). There is now wireless charging too (15W), though the battery capacity was reduced slightly (at 5,500mAh it’s not small by any means). As a gaming phone, it will make use of the new variable refresh rate...
